Doors

Doors can be a major source of heat loss in cold weather. Installing storm doors and door sweeps on exterior doors can do a lot to help. Adding weatherstripping to the top and sides of the door opening is also important.

How to install a door sweep:

1. Trim door bottom or sweep to the width of the door.
2. Position door bottom or sweep on door so it lightly touches threshold. Mark screw holes in the center of the slot.
3. Start screws in the center of the slotted holes. Adjust door bottom or sweep as you tighten screws so the sweep rests evenly on the threshold.

Savings:

1) Door Sweep: If there is no storm door adding a door sweep to the main door can result in energy savings of $15-$20/year.
2) Weatherstripping a main door can save $10/year or more.
